Glimmer — Terms of Use
Version 1.2 · Last updated 27 September 2026 · Glimmer, by Bitlitic LLC
These terms are an agreement between you and Bitlitic LLC ("Bitlitic", "we", "us"), the maker of Glimmer. They also serve as the end-user licence agreement for the app. Our Privacy Policy explains what happens to your data and is part of this agreement.
The short version
- Glimmer is a journal. What you write is yours, and we do not claim any ownership of it.
- The free version keeps your whole journal on your device, forever, and shows ads. Glimmer Plus is a subscription that removes the ads and adds encrypted cloud sync, more writing room and a choice of voice for your reflections. It never buys access to your own writing.
- With AI reflections on, sealing a day sends that day's text to our server and on to a language-model provider so a reflection can come back. Nothing about that is stored by us. The app asks before the first time, and you can switch reflections off in Settings.
- Reflections are not medical, psychological, or mental-health advice. They are a piece of writing about your writing. In an emergency, contact your local emergency services.
- If you turn on encrypted sync you get a recovery code. We do not have a copy and cannot reset it. Lose it and the synced copy cannot be opened by anyone, including us. The journal on your phone is unaffected.
- Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google and renew automatically until you cancel them in the store.
- You need to be 13 or older.
1. Accepting these terms
By downloading, opening, or using Glimmer you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app — and if you already have, delete it.
If you use Glimmer on behalf of an organisation, you are confirming that you may bind that organisation to these terms.
2. Who can use Glimmer
You must be at least 13 years old. Glimmer is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use Glimmer only with the involvement of a parent or guardian, and a purchase should be made by whoever controls the store account.
3. What Glimmer is
Glimmer is a journal that works on your phone. You write a day, you can seal it, and Glimmer can read the day back to you as a reflection.
Free. Writing (up to five pages and 5,400 characters a day), sealing, reflections, the on-device read-aloud voice, dictation, app lock, an optional daily reminder, and export are all part of the free app. The free version keeps your whole journal on your device, for as long as you keep the app.
The free app shows ads, supplied by Google AdMob and described in the Privacy Policy: a native ad on the dashboard and on Insights, a banner in the calendar, occasional full-screen ads (after you seal a day, now and then as you move between tabs, and when you return to the app), and an optional ad you may choose to watch to reopen a single sealed day for editing. There are never ads in the editor while you write.
Glimmer Plus. A subscription that unlocks:
- no ads,
- twice the writing room (five pages and 5,400 characters a day become ten pages and 10,800),
- editing any day after you have sealed it, without watching an ad,
- reflections written in the voice of someone you choose — a partner, a parent, a best friend, a sibling, a grandparent or a mentor. This is a writing style produced by the same AI model: it does not represent, imitate or speak for any real person, it knows only what you wrote that day, and it is not counselling or therapy,
- one further reading of a day you changed after sealing, once a day,
- end-to-end encrypted cloud sync across your devices.
That is the whole difference. A subscription buys sync, extra room, a choice of voice and an ad-free app; it never buys access to writing you already have.
Some parts of Glimmer need an internet connection — reflections and cloud sync. Writing does not.
4. Accounts
You can use Glimmer without an account, and a guest keeps the entire journal on the device.
An account is needed for cloud sync and for purchases. Purchases require one for a practical reason as much as a policy one: your subscription is tied to your account, and that is what lets you restore it on another phone. A purchase made while signed out cannot be restored or synced.
You are responsible for your account credentials and for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has got in, change your password, use Log out everywhere in Settings to sign every device out, and tell us at customer-service@bitlitic.com.
We may suspend or close an account that is being used to break these terms, to attack the service, or in a way that puts other people at risk.
5. Subscriptions and billing
The plans. Glimmer Plus is sold as two auto-renewing subscriptions in the "Glimmer Plus" group: monthly at $4.99 and annual at $29.99. Prices vary by region, and the price you will actually pay is the one the store shows you at the moment of purchase.
Who bills you. Payment is taken by the Apple App Store or Google Play, not by us. We never see your card details.
Auto-renewal. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before that period ends. Your store account is charged for the renewal within 24 hours of the end of the current period, at the then-current price for your plan.
Managing and cancelling. Manage or cancel your subscription in your store's subscription settings — on iPhone, Settings → your name → Subscriptions; on Android, the Play Store → your profile → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the subscription stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
Refunds. We do not process refunds, because we do not take the payment. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies, and any request goes to them.
Changes to the price. If we change the price of a plan, the store will tell you and ask for your consent before the new price is charged, as the store's rules require.
What happens when it lapses. Your journal is unaffected: the copy on your phone stays exactly where it is. The free writing limits and ads return. See the Privacy Policy for how long the synced copy is kept.
On iOS. Where Apple requires it, Apple's standard End User Licence Agreement for licensed applications applies to your use of Glimmer in addition to these terms. Where the two conflict, Apple's standard EULA governs the matters it covers. Apple is not a party to these terms, has no obligation to provide support for Glimmer, and is a third-party beneficiary entitled to enforce them against you.
6. Your writing, and the licence we need
Your writing is yours. You keep every right you have in what you write into Glimmer. We claim no ownership of it, and we do not use it to train models.
To actually run the parts of the service you ask for, you give us a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, transmit, and process your content — but only to do the thing you asked for:
- to pass a sealed day to our language-model provider and return a reflection, while AI reflections are on,
- to store and review a reflection you choose to report (the reflection's text, not your entry),
- to store the encrypted copy of your entries when cloud sync is on, and to hand it back to your devices.
That licence covers nothing else. It ends when the content is deleted, and no part of it lets us publish, sell, or show your writing to anyone.
Note what the encryption means in practice: with sync on, your entries are encrypted on your device before they are sent, so what we hold is ciphertext we cannot read. Asking for a reflection is the deliberate exception, because a model cannot read ciphertext.
Our side. Glimmer itself — the app, its design, its name, its artwork — is ours, and these terms give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use it rather than any ownership of it. You may not copy it, resell it, reverse engineer it, or strip the parts of it that identify us, except where the law says you may regardless.
7. Using Glimmer fairly
Please do not:
- break the law with it, or use it to harm, threaten, or harass someone;
- upload content you have no right to;
- attack, overload, probe, or try to break into the service, or work around its limits, rate limits, or paywalls;
- use an automated system to generate reflections at volume, or resell, redistribute, or wrap the reflection service in your own product;
- try to make the model produce something that would be illegal, or to extract someone else's data.
We may limit, suspend, or end access where this is happening.
8. Reflections, and what they are not
They are optional. Before the first reflection is requested, the app explains what will be sent and to whom, and asks you to agree. You can turn AI reflections off at any time in Settings → AI reflections; with them off, sealing still saves your day and nothing is sent for a reflection.
With AI reflections on, sealing a day sends that day's text to our server, which passes it to a third-party language-model provider — currently DigitalOcean Gradient serverless inference, running open models such as GLM and DeepSeek, with AI/ML API (aimlapi.com) as a backup if that is unavailable — and returns the reflection. Our server does not store the text; it holds it only for the length of the request. The provider's own retention policy applies to what it receives, and we do not control it.
A reflection is not advice. It is not medical, psychological, therapeutic, diagnostic, or crisis care, and it is not a substitute for a qualified professional. Nothing in Glimmer creates a clinical relationship of any kind. Do not delay seeking help because of something a reflection said.
It can be wrong. Reflections are generated by a language model. They can misread you, miss the point, or state something inaccurate, and they will not always be available. Treat them as a prompt for your own thinking, nothing more.
Tell us when one is wrong. Every reflection has a Report this reflection button. A report sends us the reflection's text and the reason you chose — never your entry — so a person can review it and we can improve how reflections are written. The Privacy Policy says how long reports are kept.
If you are in crisis. Glimmer includes a safety net: when writing shows signs of a crisis, the app points to a helpline and shows ways to reach one, alongside the usual reflection. It is an automatic check, made by a phrase check and by the language model, and it can miss things or misread them. It is not a monitored service — no one is watching your journal, and nothing is reported to anyone. If you are in danger, contact your local emergency services or a crisis line in your country right now. In the US you can call or text 988.
9. Encryption and your recovery code
Turning on encrypted sync creates a key that stays on your device and shows you a recovery code once. That code is the only thing that can open your synced journal on another phone.
We do not have a copy of it and cannot reset it. This is a deliberate design choice, and it is the price of us not being able to read your journal. If you lose the code, the synced copy cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.
The journal on your phone is unaffected either way; it never needed the code. Keep the code somewhere you would keep a password.
10. Ending it
You. Stop using Glimmer whenever you like. Delete the app to remove the journal from your device. Delete your account at Settings → Account → Delete account to erase the account and everything synced to our servers, permanently and immediately — and note that the journal on your phone is deliberately left alone, and that deleting the account does not cancel a store subscription. Cancel that in the store. If you cannot reach the in-app control, the out-of-app route is described at https://bitlitic.com/#/glimmer/delete-account.
Us. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, if we are required to by law, or if we stop offering the service. If we stop offering it, we will give reasonable notice through the app or by email so you can export your journal first.
Discontinuing features. We may change, add, or remove features. If we remove something material from Glimmer Plus, you can cancel; refunds remain a matter for Apple or Google.
Sections 6, 8, 11, 12 and 15 survive the end of this agreement.
11. What we do not promise
Glimmer is provided as is and as available. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties that are not written down here, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
In particular, we do not promise that:
- the service will be uninterrupted, timely, or error-free;
- reflections will be accurate, useful, or available;
- cloud sync is a backup you should rely on as your only copy. Keep your own copy. Glimmer includes JSON and PDF export in Settings for exactly this, and the journal on your phone is the original.
Nothing here takes away rights you have as a consumer that cannot be taken away under the law where you live.
12. Limits on liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Bitlitic is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, or lost content — including entries that cannot be recovered because a recovery code was lost.
Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability for any claim relating to Glimmer is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for Glimmer in the twelve months before the claim, or US$50.
These limits do not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law, including death or personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When we do, we change the version number and the "Last updated" date at the top and post the new version at https://bitlitic.com/#/glimmer/terms.
If a change is material, the app will show you the new version and ask you to accept it before you carry on using the features it affects, and we may also tell you by email. If you do not accept, stop using the app and delete your account; the journal on your phone and your ability to export it are not affected. Changes that are not material — a clearer sentence, a corrected link — take effect when they are posted.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Ohio, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. This does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in, and you may always bring a claim in your local courts where that law says you can.
15. Everything else
If a provision here is held unenforceable, the rest stays in force. Our not enforcing something is not a waiver of it. You may not transfer these terms; we may transfer them to a successor if Glimmer changes hands, and will say so.
These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between us about Glimmer.
16. Contact
Questions about these terms, or anything else about Glimmer, can be sent to customer-service@bitlitic.com. We usually reply within a few days.
